The design features a hand-painted, enamel forget-me-not flower with purple petals.
Purple is a composite of all the military branch colors and symbolizes joint services. At its center, the white pearl represents femininity, loyalty and integrity. The gold plated center star and letter V on the tips of the leaves stand for Veteran, Victory and Valor.
Inspiration for the design came from retired Lieutenant General Patricia (Patty) D. Horoho, who served 33 years with the U.S. Army and continues her service to Veterans and service members. She retired as a Lieutenant General, the 43rd U.S. Army Surgeon General and Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Command. She made history as the first woman, first nurse and first non-physician to hold these posts.
General Horoho is passionate about honoring all women Veterans and developed the initial design concept for the commemorative brooch. Ann Hand, founder and CEO of one of the most distinctive and prominent jewelry companies in America, brought General Horoho’s design ideas to life.
